Simtek Ratzenberger Imola 1994

Simtek Grand Prix was one of two new teams on the grid for the opening race of 1994. Team boss Nick Wirth who was 28 was the youngest team owner in F1 history and also the driving force behind the design and engineering of the team.

The name Simtek was an amalgamation of the worlds “simulated technology” which also adorned the sister company Simtek Research formed in 1989 between Wirth and Max Mosley. Clients of Simtek Research included the FIA and major companies participating in motor racing.

Williams

Frank Williams (2002)

Frank Williams from South Shields in North East England started his racing team in much the same way as many others. Through true grit and determination and fuel by the passion of winning Williams are a highly successful racing team but one who exist to make money and make money by winning in what is, after all, a professional sport.

Williams have always built a very strong business first and foremost with racing as a means to meet the market demand of sponsors. It is this approach that has allowed Williams to keep afloat where so many woud have faltered and sunk during what have been lean times on the track and against constructor teams that has excessive budgets way above what Williams have.

Lola

Mastercard Lola T97/30

1997 saw two notable new teams enter Formula 1. But oh how did they differ.

Jackie Stewart alongside son Paul launched Stewart Grand Prix which featured works backing from Ford and sponsorship from HSBC and Malaysia. Results were mixed but a strong finish at Monaco saw Barrichello finish second and the team were constant mid-field runners.

Lola had backing from Mastercard albeit on an obscure arrangement which was based on both results (hard to come by for a new team at the best of times) and a subscriptions. It was with Mastercard that the problems for Lola began and quickly snowballed in to near demise for the company.
