F1 sells out to Sky

In a shock move the BBC have lost the right to show the full F1 season from 2012 onwards. But what does this mean?

Simply put, the BBC has the rights to show half of the F1 season with the other half being shown as highlights. With that die hard F1 fans are now faced with the choice – pay for Sky Sports or watch just half the Formula One season live. Hardly a great option at around £20 per month on top of your basic Sky subscription (at time of writing).

Formula One safety improvements

The statistics speak for themselves. In the 1950’s there were 11 driver fatalities in Formula One races, followed by another 11 in the 1960’s. Throughout the 1970s Jackie Stewart, Professor Sid Watkins and Bernie Ecclestone campaigned for improvements to safety, but the numbers only reduced to ten. However, people began to listen to their argument in the 1980s following the tragic 1982 season which saw the loss of Giles Villeneuve and Riccardo Paletti. Only one more fatality would follow during this decade, as Elio De Angelis died in a testing accident in 1987. Things were much better for the start of 1990s and people started thinking that we would never see a fatality again. However, the Imola race of 1994 changed all that.

Suzuka 1993 saw the début of a fresh faced Irishman who in his very first race with the Jordan team managed to both secure his place in F1 and enrage non other than Ayrton Senna.

Eddie Irvine had opted to unlap himself from race leader Senna in an effort to overtake a struggling Damon Hill driving the Williams Renault. After a little alcohol and winding up from Gerhard Berger, Senna found Irvine sitting on a table in the Jordan cabin and decided to have a word about race etiquette, but didn’t expect to be called “too slow” by the rookie.

The Williams Renault FW15C has a good shout at being the most advanced formula one car ever made boasting traction control, ABS, anti-lock brakes, active suspension, fly-by-wire controls, telemetry and continuously variable transmission (although the latter was never raced and quickly banned).

The car is not new though as you may expect, in fact all of this technology was available for the 1993 Formula One season.

McLaren MP4-18 – the car that never raced

The McLaren MP4-18 was intended to be the championship contender for the 2003 F1 Championship. The car was designed during  disappointing 2002 season and McLaren principle Ron Dennis decided that a radical approach was needed to take McLaren back to the top.

Come 2003 the car was not in a state where it was ready to race so the team opted for a highly advanced version of the 2002 chassis the MP4-17D to start the season. The MP4-18 proved unreliable as it suffered severe issues with regards to cooling the engine, in the most part, due to the narrow sidepods of the car.

Schumacher Cheats (again)

Michael Schumacher isn’t a man known to be apologetic for his actions on the track. He is ruthless and hard, but is the seven times Formula One champion pushing the bounds too far?

His actions at the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix haven’t exactly divided opinion. It is widely accepted that his driving while trying to block a pass by former team mate Rubens Barrichello was dangerous in the extreme – only Schumacher disagrees which isn’t unusual.

F1 Trivia – Your Questions

I seem to get a lot of emails these days asking me various F1 related questions and there is a common theme amongst them… so I thought I’d write handful of  Q&A’s (as best I can) and share the most frequently asked questions with you.

Q: Could Damon Hill have continued in Adelaide 1994?
A: Nope, the front wishbone was broken. The wheel of Schumacher’s Benetton had placed sufficient force upon it to bend it and fracture it.

Rubbish F1 drivers!

Deletraz

F1 is the pinnacle of world motor sport. The best teams, the best sponsors, the best equipment and the best drivers. Okay that isn’t strictly true. F1 has had it’s fair share of terrible drivers, non paying sponsors and teams that are simply comical!

We take a look at the worst F1 drivers and believe it or not it was very difficult to keep the list to just 10. F1 has had it’s fair share of mediocre to just out right rubbish drivers.
