Ayrton Senna Da Silva was born on the 21st March 1960 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was the son of an affluent landowner, and this it was this wealth which allowed him to pursue his passion for motor racing from an early age. At the age of just four Senna was given his first kart by father Milton, the rest as they say is history.

Nigel Mansell

Pre-F1- 1976-1979

Nigel Mansell didn’t follow his dream of a racing career until the age of 23 due to opposition from his father. However, utilising money earned from his job as a special constable in Devon, Mansell paid to enter the Formula Ford series in 1976. This turned into a learning year but in 1977 Mansell was back again and dominated the series. However, things never go smoothly for Nigel and in the closing stages of the year he was involved in a nasty accident which broke his neck and led to doctors telling him he would never race again.

Mika Hakkinen

Mika Hakkinen is said to be the only person Michael Schumacher has feared, and when watching the Finn drive it’s easy to see why. Unbelievably brave, stunningly quick and with car control that was the envy of the grid, it’s a wonder Mika Hakkinen didn’t win more than his two world championships.

Hakkinen took over from Keke Rosberg as Finland’s F1 star despite the occasional challenge from fellow Finn Mika Salo. After winning the 1990 British F3 championship Hakkinen got his F1 break with Lotus for 1991. Despite Lotus being close to its demise Hakkinen finished a very creditable eight in the championship in 1992 following six points finishes.

Stirling Moss

Stirling Moss is known as one of the greatest drivers never to win a championship and although coming close on several occasions, both the points systems and mechanical problems played there parts.

In 1951 Moss joined HWM after a quick rising through the junior ranks and although he showed some signs of skill and pace he struggled while in under performing cars for the first few years. In 1954 Moss made a choice to drive a privately owned Maserati which paid off as he gained a third in Spa and was signed by the Silver Arrows team of Mercedes for the 1955 season partnering the world champion Juan Manuel Fangio.

Jim Clark

Jim Clark was one of Formula One’s best loved champions and his early death robbed the sport of not just an unbelievable talent but of an admirable and likeable Scotsman.

Despite his ability to dominate a race car, out of it Jim Clark was a vulnerable and reluctant to embrace the limelight. It may be for these quiet, and understated qualities that the public remember Clark with such fondness.

Born in 1936 Clark grew up on the family farm in Scotland, a long way from the hectic lifestyle of the big cities and F1 paddock. It was on these fields of the farm that Clark first go behind the wheel of a car (without parental consent). At 17, Clark gained his driving licence and used the money he worked from working on the farm to buy a Sunbeam Talbot.

James Hunt

James Hunt was F1′s wild child and life was always lived to the limit. In 92 F1 entries Hunt accumulated 14 pole positions, 10 race wins and a word championship showing that not only was he pushing the boundaries in his personal life, but he could push a Formula One car to it’s and his limits too.

James Hunt was born on August 29th 1947 to the family of a stockbroker. As a child he was hyperactive and difficult and rebellious. All the while Hunt was able to teach himself tennis and squash and play at a high standard. But it would be racing cars where Hunt would really excel but not without some initial difficulty. Another area Hunt was well known to excel would be woman.
